Kamala Harris: A Trailblazing Leader

Kamala Harris is a barrier-breaking American politician and attorney, born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to Jamaican and Indian immigrant parents. Her parents instilled in her a strong sense of justice and public service.  Growing up in Berkeley, California, Kamala was raised with a passion for making a difference. She studied economics and political science at Howard University before earning her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

Kamala's career in public service began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, where she quickly ascended the ranks to become the Deputy District Attorney in Oakland. In 2003, she made history by becoming the first woman, African American, and South Asian American to serve as the District Attorney of San Francisco.

Kamala continued to break barriers as she became the first woman, African American, and South Asian American Attorney General of California in 2010.
